July Unity KOTM Sketch Challenge

With less than an hour to spare, I wanted to post a card for this month's Unity KOTM Sketch Challenge.  I used a stamp from Nov. 2011.  I'm always working on making cards with a masculine feel for Operation Write Home and I thought this sentiment could be good for guys.  Paired with some lodge-inspired papers, I think a man will be happy to choose this card from the box to send a note to his loved ones at home.

Ack!  Sideways upload!

Papers- SU (plaid), DCWV (other patterns)
Punches- EK Success and Marvy
Ribbon- Offray
Nesties- Ovals
Stamp- Unity KOTM Nov. 2011

Lots of Sketches

I always get excited for my summer vacation and dream of all the free time I'll have.  Hahahaha!  I usually feel busier in the summer than during the school year because I try to tackle lengthy projects and I travel a lot.  Today I was waiting around at home for someone to come, so I had plenty of time to get crafty.  I also had some inspiration.  Not only is OWH in need of quality cards as more and more units sign up as contacts, but I also got news that a friend has had surgery and I'd like to send lots of cards her way over the next few weeks while she recovers because she is always on top of sending cards herself.

I decided to go back and catch up on several of the recent Sunday Sketches.  I haven't played along in weeks, so I have a lot of cards to link up!

Sketch #125 - I used my new Peach Divine Twine from Whisker Graphics!

Cards with Mom

Mom and I designed these cards to send to the residents at a nursing home.  Mom makes 30 cards a month for the residents and while she visited we got three months of cards made.  The cards need to have large print, so this Unity stamp was a great choice.
I also made the card below which inspired Mom to make the same card in white, black, and pink with a heart embellishment for February's Valentine's Day cards.  I didn't get a picture of the version we made for her.

Christmas with a swap

Time for another Christmas card.  They're my least favorite cards of the year and I'm not sure why.  Perhaps I don't feel as much creative license when it comes to this holiday or perhaps it's my lack of great Christmas supplies.  Either way, I'm trying to do a few more Christmas cards here and there.  This one used some scraps of patterned paper, a new snowman stamp I bought in January and a Cricut cut of a snowflake sent to me in a swap by Rachel.  Thanks, Rachel!

Stamp: Inkadinkado
Paper: scraps from K & Co and unknown
Die cuts/Punches: Cricut snowflake, EK circle and scalloped circle, and Nestabilities Scalloped Rectangle
Coloring: Copics

Copic Christmas

I think I used more Copics on this image than I have on any other coloring.  Just for fun, here are the 11 colors: C5, BG0000, BG18, R22, R24, R29, G24, YG03, YG67, Y13, Y17.  I'm learning, so if you have any suggestions on how I can improve my coloring, I'd love to hear what you have to say.

Stamp: Inkadinkado
Coloring: Copics
Papers: All scraps.  The pattern is likely DCWV.

Happy Saturday

I am spending my day celebrating my best friend's bachelorette party.  I hope she has a great time!  We're going to several wineries for wine tastings, having lunch and dinner out, and just generally having a fun day.

Paper: Patterned paper unknown from stash (about 9 years old, too!)
Ribbon: From my grandmother's stash of hem tape, probably Wrights brand
Nesties: Circles, Ovals, and Scalloped Ovals

Chick Challenge #41

I saw this week's Ippity Chick Challenge (#41) and knew I had to ink up the "Fore" stamp set for it.  I used My Mind's Eye Hattie papers for this card, embossed the golf ball with Swiss Dots, used American Crafts Eyelets, and colored with Copics. I'll be giving this card to my great uncle when he celebrates his 90th birthday next month!

This card is just a bonus.  Since I had the stamps out, I decided to make a card for OWH.  This also happens to be OWH Sketch #76.

Do you know what this design is?

I made this card after my mom inspired me.  I am hoping it's clear what the card is trying to represent, but I can't be sure.  Do you know what my inspiration is?  And more importantly, do you think this card will appeal to our heroes?

Have a Cheerful Day!

This week's OWH Midweek Throwdown is to make a card with a sentiment of encouragement.  I think this qualifies as encouraging.

Stamp: SU Furnished with Love
Nesties: Labels Two (I cut the red layer by hand after tracing around the outside of the die.)
Paper: Basic Grey Picadilly
Ribbon: Offray
Hardware: Making Memories
Coloring: Copics
Sketch: #49 (loosely based on it, anyway!)

This is one of many cards I made when my mom spent a few days at my house visiting.  We made 90 cards for a nursing home since Mom sends a set of 30 each month as part of her church's outreach program and she wanted to take advantage of my supplies.  We also made cards for OWH that I'll share over the next few days.  Our biggest project, however, was getting some new furniture for my craft room.  We went to the local Habitat ReStore for the first time this morning where we found a computer desk and a shelving unit that are now hanging out in my craft room holding my supplies.  I'm thrilled to finally have plenty of storage for my supplies at a reasonable price (just $35 for the two pieces) and to have supported a local charity that benefits my community.  This also nixes any plans for turning part of the room into a guest room.  So sorry to my guests who will have to camp out in the living room!

If you're in the market for anything for your home and you have a ReStore, it might be worth your while to stop in.  I was impressed by the wide selection of items in the store.  They had all kinds of furniture, any building materials you could want, large appliances, and even some household goods like small kitchen appliances, decorations, lamps, dishes, and more.  If you're renovating your house, they'll accept donations of useable building materials, too!  It's a great way to support Habitat for Humanity and get a bargain in the process.

A little Unity fun!

This card combines some scraps from my desk with a couple of Unity stamps.   I'll send this to OWH so a hero can send a note of encouragement home (or even write a note to another deployed hero who is having a rough time).

For the boys

When I spotted this paper (25 sheets for $1.16 at a dollar store), I knew it would make good cards for teenagers.  I made one like this and stopped.  I want to do something different to make some more but I'm stuck without any ideas for the moment.

A normal Christmas card

Hi everyone!  Just a friendly reminder to finish up your package of cards for this month's OWH challenge (half fall or winter/half anytime).  Cards are due to shippers at the end of the month, so you have just about a week before you have to mail your cards.  I don't think I'll have enough to make it worth my while this time, but I'm consistently working so that I'll have a nice box to send by mid-August.

The last Christmas cards I posted were (by my description) weird!  Here's one that follows a traditional color palette.

Funny story:  I was in the middle of making this card when I noticed I had a FB message from a friend I hadn't conversed with in about a year.  I responded and then looked back at my card.  I about fell over when I noticed the card I had nearly finished is almost an exact replica of a dress my friend made and wore to our college's ball.  I dug through my photos and found a picture of my friend wearing her dress.  It's like photo inspiration in reverse!  How unlikely!

Embossing Folder: Lace by Darice
Paper: cardstock from stash
Ribbon: Offray (thanks to Mommom's stash)
Stamp: Michael's
Punch: I don't have a ticket punch, so I use a 1/2" circle punch on the corners

Chick Challenge #40

Chick Challenges with Ippity is celebrating their 40th sketch challenge and Maria's birthday.  As much as I wanted to make this a birthday card because of the sketch pennant, I don't own a good selection of birthday stamps by Unity.  Instead, I went with a love theme because Operation Write Home always needs more love cards and that's where I send most of my cards.

A bonus using the left over pieces of paper from the sketch card:

FWF

This is my first time inking up this little bird stamp.  I got this set and a few others in the recent $4.44 sale.  I love a good bargain and I couldn't pass up the chance to get a few new sets at that price.

I colored with my Copics.  I still need more colors to make things match as well as I want, but I'm satisfied with this one.  I used Offray ribbon and a Colorbok brad to finish off the card.

The weirdest Christmas cards

You know, if you read this blog from time to time, that I like a bargain.  Clearance is my friend.   I got this K&Co kit intended to make two gift card holders for 50 cents today.  I took it apart and turned the supplies into four cards.  Four weird Christmas cards.  The color scheme is strange and the fluffy trim is bizarre.  As much as they're not my style, I suspect there are some grandmothers or some little girls who will appreciate these pink cards.  It's fun to make something outside my comfort zone now and then.

I'm going to link these up to the complementary colors Midweek Throwdown challenge on OWH Stars and Stamps.  Red and green are complementary, so pink and green are close enough!

While I was at TJMaxx, I also found that they had restocked some EK Success punches.  Border punches were $3.99 and medium or two pack small punches were $2.99.  They also had some hand punches and corner punches but I didn't notice the prices on those items.  There was also a pack of We R Memory Keepers 6x6 paper marked down to $2; I absolutely bought it!  It's definitely worth checking out your local store to see what's there.  If they have things you would normally buy, you can save a bundle.  The punches alone were about 70% off retail.

A few cards to share

Each of the cards below was made with scraps I had on my desk.  I kept trying to tidy up and then I would find things that I wanted to make into cards.  So, my desk isn't totally clean, but I did make 10 or so cards.

Unity Ippity CC #39

I love a good sketch challenge, so I'm getting my Ippity Chick Challenge card in just under the wire.  Hey, there's an hour to spare, so that means I'm early, right? This is for ippity Chick Challenge #39.  I'm also linking it to the Unity flower challenge running for the last two weeks of July.

This should  be a great card to send to Operation Write Home because the sentiment is versatile- great for a birthday, anniversary, wedding, or other celebration. I'm always looking for sentiments that can do double or triple duty!

Getting inky!

It's not often I get really inky when I stamp.  I try to avoid such messes as they inevitably end up in the wrong place and I end up with extra cleaning to do.  CAS all the way!

I decided to live dangerously for the sake of trying a new technique.  I chose a piece of multicolored paper, stamped a background stamp in Versamark and embossed it in clear.  Then I applied black ink to the whole think and wiped it off the embossed parts.  My fingers were covered in black ink but I think it was worth it.

Ribbon Flag TT

Julie shared her ribbon flag tutorial today on OWH Stars and Stamps.   I'd seen the card on her blog earlier, but seeing the tutorial gave me a nudge to try it.  I'd made some flags before with ric rac as the stripes, but I don't remember doing one with ribbon.

Julie shared her tips for ribbon.  My tip is to choose what you buy based on what paper colors you use most often.  I have lots of ribbon that doesn't match my paper so now I try to buy neutrals and solids in shades I know I will use.  Consider splurging on the ribbon packs that coordinate with the paper line you're using.  They'll look great and they often have neat trims that are hard to find elsewhere.  I have a trip to an Offray ribbon outlet in the works in the next month and I'll be sure to report back.

Brad: Colorbok

MFT Stamps and new paper

Mom and I scored some new paper packs of 25 sheets of identical patterned cardstock at a dollar store while we were in MA for the weekend.  This card uses four coordinating patterns.  I paper pieced the image from My Favorite Things that was a prize from OWH.  The sentiment is also from the set, but I didn't use the entire sentiment.

FWF Friday the 13th

Howdy!  Happy Friday the 13th.  I hope you're having a lucky day!

Friday means Friends with Flair, so here's a little Unity to share!  I've been having fun recently with these scrappy quilt backgrounds.  They're easy and a fun way to use some patterns that might be hard to use on a card in larger pieces.
Stamps: Unity Stamp Company (Eco Chic flower and a freebie sentiment)
Papers: DCWV Fall and Halloween Stack 2011, cardstock from stash
Embellishments: MM eyelets
Tools: Crimper, eyelet setter
Coloring: Copics
Other: Curvy rectangles are cut with a Cricut and were received in a swap.  Thanks, Laura!

Grateful

Have you seen the newest OWH challenge?  This time around the theme is half Fall/Winter and half anytime.  I feel like they're doing a challenge a month now and that's too quick for me!  I like to fill up a large box because it's much more economical.  It only costs about 5 cents per card to mail a large box but the few times I've mailed a small package it costs as much as 20 cents per card.  I'd rather ship a large box because I could definitely put that extra 10 or 15 cents per card into some quality cardstock!  I might hit up the local printing shop later this month to see what they have on hand.  I want to use up my GP 110 before I go because I know I won't want to use it once I find something better.  I'm down to about 50 sheets, so we're nearing the end!  Anyway, I digressed from the challenge details.  Boxes are due at the end of the month to any shipper with half fall/winter and half anytime cards.

I made six of these cards using old DCWV paper from the 2009 Fall stack.  The circle was stamped with leaves from SU All Natural (still a favorite set of mine even though it's long retired) and a sentiment by Studio G (from Walmart last year).  The burgundy strip is punched with a Fiskars border punch and tied up with Offray ribbon.

I'm grateful that today is my last day of Common Core training for this summer.  I had no idea how long of a commitment I got myself into last summer when I agreed to attend the training.  I'm also grateful that I get to see my parents and most of my extended family this weekend.  What are you grateful for today?

Put your thongs on!

I have a great co-worker whose favorite expression is "Put your big girl panties on and deal with it."  She says this to females AND males and it always cracks me up!  When I saw this stamp set, I splurged and bought it so I could send her a card.  She's been having a difficult time lately and I think this will bring her some cheer.

The stamp set is from There She Goes Clear Stamps.  This was the first set I'd ordered from them and I think the company is fairly new.  They offer lots of offbeat stamps, so if you're looking for something outside of the mainstream, take a peek at what they have to offer.  I loved their math and science themed sets, too, but didn't purchase them.  They're on my wishlist.

The images are colored with Bic Mark-its.  The polka dotted flip flops are popped on dimensional foam.  The scallop was purchased already cut and is by The Paper Company.  I set this card up like a postcard, so I simply wrote on the back.

Hello mojo!

After spending most of Sunday following Mass making a blanket (and cursing myself for choosing to put off a yarn project until the week of 105 degree weather), I got a little time in my craft room to make cards on Sunday night.  I had been making some pretty sub-par things of late but I finally got a few cards together that I really, really liked.  I'll share a few this week.  :)

First, a card for a teenage boy!  Yay!  I never end up with many cards in this category, so I'm excited to have had this one come out well.  Of course, a teenage boy has likely never used a cassette tape since I'm pretty sure I haven't really used them in nearly 20 years!  ;-)

Patterned paper: DCWV Rockstar
Stamps: Imaginesnce (image) and Studio G (words)
Paper Punches: EK Success
Other: ATG, Xyron, dimensional foam, Versamark, Copics, Xacto knife

Missing you!

OK, all those wonderful patriotic cards on the OWH/OSH blog hop last week had me thinking patriotic.
This card is very simple.  What was interesting to me was that I spent so much time hating it as I made it.  Everything seemed wrong until I switched the color of the back layer.  At first, I had it on the cream that I stamped the image and sentiment on.  Something about the card felt off, so I switched it to a burgundy that matched the strip of polka dotted paper and all of the sudden the image popped off the card.

I colored with Copics and Marvy Le Plume markers.  Gosh, I can't wait to replace the LePlumes- they're so streaky!  I used a white gel pen to highlight the flag's white stripes.

Stamps: Amuse (house) and Inkadinkado (sentiment)
Papers: I have no idea!  The stars were sold by the sheet at JoAnn.  The polka dots were in a pack from Ollies, maybe by Making Memories?
Punches: EK Success

Anniversary Love

A simple card to share today.  I used scraps of paper from Graphic 45, MME, and one bit from DCWV to fashion the background.  I tied a ribbon around, added some hearts and a little Glossy Accents to the tiny heart, and it was all set!  I think it would be a great anniversary card for the Midweek Throwdown, so I'll add an anniversary sentiment to the inside. I think it's masculine; what do you think?

ODBD July- Cool Colors

Yolanda posted July's ODBD challenge today and I looked down and saw exactly what I was going to use.  I happened to have a little stack of cardstock scraps in just the colors we needed to use for the challenge.  I whipped them up into a ruffle card and added a digi sentiment I created a while back.  The ribbon was a perfect match- what serendipity!
Please take some time this month to make a card with cool colors (any greens, blues, or purples in any combination) and link up to the challenge found here.  When we get 25 cardmakers to link a card, ODBD donates shipping fees for one box of cards.  At 50 cards, they donate shipping for a second box.  We've made it to 50 each month, but a couple of months have been cut close.  As it's summer now, lots of people are spending less time indoors crafting, so we need all the help we can get!  Oh, and two posters get a $25 gift certificate, too.  Thanks ODBD!

Unity Chick Challenge #38 and FWF

I'm back with a little Unity fun.  I decided to make a baby card with Chick Challenge Sketch #38 for one of the many showers I'm attending this summer.  Lots of friends and family members are expecting- it's so exciting!

The yellow "baby" text is a transparency overlay by Colorbok that I layered on top of the paper pieced stroller.  I decided to use a photo corner shape instead of the semicircles in the sketch and I created some of them with paper punches by EK and Fiskars.  I added some large American Crafts eyelets and tied up the brown satin ribbon from JoAnn into a simple knot.

When I visited the Unity blog today, I was super excited to see that my last CC card was chosen by the Chicks and I get to display the featured peeps badge.  As soon as I figure out how to grab it, it will be in my sidebar!  :-D

I colored. And it turned out pretty.

In a swap, Raeanna sent me a bunch of large images to color.  As I said before, I'm not a huge fan of coloring, though I'd like to learn to enjoy it.  I chose this witch sitting on a pumpkin because the markers I have suited its color scheme better than some of the other images she sent.  I had to supplement my Copics with Bic Mark-its, so there are a few streaky areas that I just couldn't get to smooth out.  It was the first big thing I've finished coloring.  Usually I end up throwing them away early on and giving up.  There are plenty of mistakes, but it's not a train wreck, so I used it.

I used Nesties to cut her out and add a scallop border.  The orange cardstock is stamped with a witch hat in Only Orange.  The sentiment stamp and the hat are by Studio G.  The ribbon is Michael's and the brad is Studio G from Walmart.

All together now:

Thanks for visiting.  Did you see that OWH has a new challenge due the end of this month?  It's for half and half general and fall/winter cards.  Holiday-specific are OK, but they love getting general fall and winter cards too since they can be sent for many weeks instead of for just one specific date.
